3 out of 5 stars Approach with Caution   July 28, 2008

I am sure this is an excellent book for many women. Sadly, I didn't find it particularly helpful. I think part of the problem is that it is a personal guide written by a wife and mother, so there are pages and pages on husbands/partners and children. I am childless and not in a relationship so that large chunks of the book are not relevant to me. My major issue was telling my 81 year old mother that I had been diagnosed with breast cancer. The author also had to tell her mother, which she did over the phone, an episode covered by all of two rather jokey sentences. Apparently her mother swore. I told mine face to face and she fainted. I chose to have my treatment in the private sector. The author had hers on the NHS and thus the section on private treatment is exceedingly weak. Again, it comes down to personal experience. The breast care nurse who is co-author makes no mention of the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), which is part of the Department of health and regulates all medicinal products on the UK market. The MHRA is an excellent source of information on drugs used in the treatment of breast cancer - it licensed them.
The book is well written, which is to be expected as the author is a journalist, and if you want to read a book on breast cancer, its probably as good as any (and I've looked at a lot). Nevertheless, it didn't provide me with any more information than I easily obtained from Cancer Backup, Cancer Research and other such websites.

5 out of 5 stars This book helped me through my treatment   January 3, 2008

Just finished my radiotherapy and I've read and re-read this book. It's reassuring, reliable and comprehensive - the sort of book you are always dipping in and out of. I've recently read The Secret History of a Woman Patient and I recommend this too because it complements The Breast Cancer Book. It's Janet Rhys Dent's gripping personal account of learning how to be a patient and it reads like a story that keeps you turning the pages. It too is upbeat, just like The Breast Cancer Book.

This is the best health book I have read in a very long time. Buy it. Seriously I have searched the internet and read enough books to fill a library and this is the best one. Unlike so many books it doesn't frighten or patronise, it is clear yet friendly and covers everything you need to know giving you honest answers whilst valuing your right to choose yet without heaping on blame or wandering off into hippy trippy land... There are many people claiming they can cure you or offer advice and they haven't got a clue - this book is different. Val has had cancer and Debbie has been a breast nurse for decades - they know what they're talking about. Its really about women's breast cancer but there is a lot of information which is applicable to all cancers - my family has been affected by a few different ones and I wish I had read this book years ago.

It's also great if you are a partner, relative or friend of someone going through breast cancer - lots of practical advice and it will really help you to understand and support them.

I don't recommend anything unless it is really good - this is.

This has not been my best year. Two operations for breast cancer and not enough information. I discovered this book through Amazon .co.uk and immediately ordered it. I have found it to be such a help and actually enjoyed reading it at a time when I found it difficult to put everything together for myself.
My thanks to Val and Debbie for my new "bible".

5 out of 5 stars Not a victim in sight!   October 9, 2000

How refreshing to find a book that simply refers to "women with breast cancer" rather than breast cancer victims, breast cancer patients or breast cancer sufferers.
