Amazon.co.uk Review Your Life in Your Hands tells the story of one woman determined to overcome breast cancer. Jane Plant felt as if she was being stalked by a supernaturally evil killer that, however many times was vanquished, relentlessly kept coming back to attack. The fourth time the breast cancer re-occurred, Jane Plant felt like giving up: "The chill realisation hit me that it wasn't going to let me go until it had claimed my life," she says in her book Your Life In Your Hands. But Plant didn't give up. Instead, tapping into her scientific training, she set about trying to find a rational reason for the breast cancer. In the UK, one woman in ten is likely to contract the disease. In China, breast cancer affects one woman in 10,000. It was this startling statistical disparity that led Plant to believe there had to be a dietary trigger for the disease. As she continued her scientific investigations, Plant became convinced she had discovered a causal link between dairy produce and breast cancer. Having made her discovery, Plant immediately adopted a non-dairy diet. Miraculously, her cancer started to subside. Five weeks later it had disappeared completely. While Your Life In Your Hands contains hard science to back its claims, Plant manages to spell out the science in a way that is easy for the uninitiated to understand. Plant's research is solid and the evidence is compelling. As well as telling the remarkable story of one woman's determination to overcome breast cancer, Your Life In Your Hands offers no-nonsense advice on how to deal with doctors, self-examination and coping with treatment. The book also includes Plant's own non-dairy diet: The Plant Programme--The Lifestyle Factors. Plant's tenacious spirit will inspire you. Her findings will surprise you. And her book will empower you to fight against the odds. --Christopher Kelly

My Shining Beacon June 11, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
It may seem odd that I, a man, should write that this book probably saved my life, but it's my very stong belief that this is the case.
In April 2005 I was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer, advanced, inoperable, and my prognosis was very bleak - perhaps 2 or 3 years to live. I had only just celebrated my 54th birthday two weeks earlier.
All I can say is thank heavens for the internet.
After leaving the hospital, still reeling from the shocking news, I sat at the computer and began to research the illness. I spent every waking hour delving through research papers and any new treatments that might possibly be available to me.
Within a few days I discovered the work of Prof. Jane Plant, and her theories on cancer shone out like a beacon in my darkness.
I'm not from any type of scientific background, but she writes about causes and prevention - and diet factors which can stimulate (or destroy) cancer cells, in such a clear, simple way, that I found it incredibly easy to follow the logic of it all.
I immediately ordered this book, read it thorougly, and made the most important decision of my life - I completely changed my diet, totally omitting any dairy produce, red meat, processed foods and harmful chemicals from my lifestyle.
I have waited over 3 years to write this review, because as a cancer sufferer you are filled with fears and doubts, such as "Were the doctors right? Will I not see 3 years?" - but I feel I must share with everyone the results of my lifestyle change.
I combined conventional hospital treatment (37 radiotherapy sessions and 30 months of hormone therapy) with strict adherence to Prof. Plant's diet recommendations.
My results have been spectacular. From a starting point in April 2005 of a T4 tumour and a very high PSA level of 182, I have now been free of any cancer medication for 9 months. Indeed, I was able to stop hormone therapy at 30 months rather than the planned 3 years.
My doctors are amazed that my PSA reading on 3rd June 2008 was a very low 0.9, while my testosterone levels are back to those of any normal, healthy male. An added bonus is the fact that I suffer no erectile dysfunction, and I went through all the radiotherapy with ease.
I am CERTAIN that following Prof Plant's program has brought me to this happy outcome. I know for sure that I will never waver from the path I've chosen, I don't miss dairy produce at all, and consider myself to be one very lucky guy. Thank you, Jane Plant!

I have just passed my 4th anniversary of my breast cancer diagnosis. I was 46 years old at the time and had an oestrogen positive, grade 3 tumour, with spread to my axillary lymph nodes. I read Jane Plant's book initially which led me to read dozens of books and studies of which I learnt in her book. It is not true as the previous reviewer stated that there is no evidence that diet after diagnosis makes any difference to the progression of the disease. There is new research showing just this, go to www.pcrm.org who are following ongoing research. I had surgery, chemo and radiotherapy but refused Tamoxifen and have had no further mammograms. I gained the confidence to make these extremely personal decisions after reading Jane's book. I have not had a drop of dairy products in 4 years and surprise surprise, my bones have not melted into a puddle despite having gone through the menopause due to chemotherapy. I feel in excellent health despite being in a very high risk group of recurrence of breast cancer. I followed the advice in her book and was initially vegan for 2 years, and juiced until it was coming out of my ears. Who knows maybe I would be alive and well had I just continued to eat and drink in the way I was doing before the diagnosis, I will never know. However I am not going to risk that for one minute. I have loosened up a little as I now eat some fish and occasional egg but that is all the animal protein I eat. The other fabulous book you must read is The China Study by T. Colin Campbell which is cited in Jane's book. This has truly amazing evidence of the power of food choices. [...].
A must October 5, 2006 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
Although, thank God, I have never had breast cancer it's something we all worry about. If someone says they don't, they're probably not being honest with themselves. In the UK one in ten of us will contract it. In China this drops to an incredible one in ten thousand. There is clearly something in our Western lifestyle that is causing the cancer, and Plant has the answer. Your Life in Your Hands tells the authors success story: recovery from almost certain death. It explains what cancer is, where it comes from and how we can change our diet and lifestyle to avoid it or get rid of it. Thank you Professor Plant.
Not backed up by research September 20, 2006 27 out of 32 found this review helpful
This is an interesting book containing a credible theory about the link between breast cancer and diet, in particular consumption of dairy products.
Unfortunately clinical research does not support the theory. Some studies have found an apparent link between breast cancer and high dairy consumption, others - in particular a massive study of nearly 49,000 women in Norway - suggest that dairy products may actually have a protective effect. I believe researchers are now investigating alternative (lifestyle) reasons for the low level of breast cancer in China.
When (as I have been) you are diagnosed with breast cancer you'll try anything to try to increase your chances of survival. I have no reason to doubt that the diet is healthy and it would probably do wonders for your fat and cholesterol intake. There are some lifestyle recommendations in the book as well which would probably contribute to your well-being.
But if you find following the diet too hard you can console yourself with the fact that there's no real evidence that it helps. If you want to see the actual research, check out the Vegan Society website which includes a 7 page section summarising all the research to date (type milk & "breast cancer" into a UK-specific search engine). And if you are uneasy about Professor Plant's claims that all those women who followed the diet recovered from their cancer, check out any UK breast cancer forum and sadly you'll find examples to the contrary.
Five Years Later April 19, 2006 15 out of 16 found this review helpful
I wrote a review of this book in 2001 - Plain Common Sense. So yes, the diet, and other advice, worked. It helped me to beat secondary breast cancer against all the odds. My blood counts throughout my third course of chemo were far better than during the first two, and better than a normal woman. This caused so much comment that the nurses wanted to know what on earth I had been doing.
And for anybody who thinks it is hard work, I liked the diet so much that I still follow a modifed form of it. Once you are accustomed to not eating dairy, it seems rather revolting and I can't imagine ever touching the stuff again. It's also made me, far more aware of the hormone altering chemicals that leach into our food from packaging, that we ladle on our faces, and have all around our homes.
Perhaps if this book had been available before, I, and a distressing number of friends, could all have avoided breast cancer. My daughter was very sceptical thinking I was just following the latest guru, but she heard Jane Plant's work discussed in a lecture at University, changed her degree to focus on hormone altering chemicals in the environment, and is now an eco-toxicologist.
So for anybody not sure, read this book and give it a go. It worked for me.
